THANK YOU LETTER
Thank You Letter Tips:
The thank you letter for a job interview should be mailed the same day or next day after the interview. There are many different opinions on whether or not the letter should be typed, e-mailed or if a thank you card is appropriate. Our recommendations is to continue to respond in a formal business manner by typing a letter and envelope just like you did your cover letter and resume. Why take the risk of the interviewer thinking that it was inappropriate to send a thank you card or e-mail? An interviewer won't think a typed formal letter is inappropriate. An e-mail thank you is OK if they interviewer indicated he or she was going to make an immediate decision. If you don't have their e-mail, a fax is OK. Remember, you don't know who might be lurking around fax machines and your thank you may not get to the interviewer. If you would rather send a hand written thank you card, do so. The important think is to send a thank you!
When typing your thank you letter, follow the same format rules as in the cover letters (see Cover Letters) and send one letter to each person you interviewed with. An interview thank you e-mail is only appropriate if the person was going to make a decision within a day or two of the interview or if you have been corresponding with the interviewer via e-mail already. Include the following information in your e-mail thank you letter or mailed cover letter:
First paragraph, thank him/her for their time and reiterate your interest in the position.
Second paragraph, discuss your relevant skills and abilities and education. If you forgot to mention something during the interview, you may include the information here if it is related to the job.
Third paragraph, thank them again for their consideration and time. It is best to indicate that you will follow up with them rather than asking them to take action by stating "I look forward to hearing form you." Remember at the end of your interview, ask when a decision is going to be made and when you could follow up. When you call they will be expecting it.
Example paragraphs:
Thank you for meeting with me yesterday. I enjoyed talking to your about the Human Resource Specialist position. After talking with you, I believe that this position is a great opportunity for me, and I would find the position very challenging and rewarding!
My Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources would be an excellent fit for this position. In addition, my two years of work experience as a Human Resource Assistant would enable me to maintain employee records and conduct employee orientations.
If you need any additional information, please give me a call. I will give you a call you next Monday to follow up with you. Thank you for your time and consideration.
