Department of Labor Announces Employment Projections
Registered Nurses top the list with 586,000 RNs expected to be hired between 2008-2009, a 23.5 percent increase. The following is a list of 30 occupations that are in DOL's 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) as having the "largest employment growth" for 2008-2009:
- Registered nurses
- Retail sales persons
- Customer service representatives
- Combined food preparation and serving workers, including fast food
- Office clerks, general
- Personal and home health aides
- Home health aides
- Postsecondary teachers
- Janitors and cleaners, except maids and housekeeping cleaners
- Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants
- Bookkeeping, accounting, and clerks
- Waiters and waitresses
- Child care workers
- Executive secretaries and administrative assistants
- Computer software engineers, applications
- Accountants and auditors
- Landscaping and grounds keeping workers
- Elementary school teachers, except special education
- Receptionists and information clerks training
- Truck drivers, heavy and tractor
- Maids and housekeeping cleaners
- Security guards
- Carpenters
- Management analysts
- Medical assistants
- Computer systems analysts
- Maintenance and repair workers, general
- Network systems and data communications analysts
- Food preparation workers
- Teacher assistants
There is also a list of "30 Fastest Growing Occupations" for 2008-2009 in the OOH. Network Systems and Data Communications jobs are expected to increase by 53.4 percent from 2008-2009 with 140,000 new hires.
