Department of Labor Announces Employment Projections

Registered Nurses top the list with 586,000 RNs expected to be hired between 2008-2009, a 23.5 percent increase.  The following is a list of 30 occupations that are in DOL's 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook  (OOH) as having the "largest employment growth" for 2008-2009:

  1. Registered nurses
  2. Retail sales persons
  3. Customer service representatives
  4. Combined food preparation and serving workers, including fast food
  5. Office clerks, general
  6. Personal and home health aides
  7. Home health aides
  8. Postsecondary teachers
  9. Janitors and cleaners, except maids and housekeeping cleaners
  10. Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants
  11. Bookkeeping, accounting, and clerks
  12. Waiters and waitresses
  13. Child care workers
  14. Executive secretaries and administrative assistants
  15. Computer software engineers, applications
  16. Accountants and auditors
  17. Landscaping and grounds keeping workers
  18. Elementary school teachers, except special education
  19. Receptionists and information clerks training
  20. Truck drivers, heavy and tractor
  21. Maids and housekeeping cleaners
  22. Security guards
  23. Carpenters
  24. Management analysts
  25. Medical assistants
  26. Computer systems analysts
  27. Maintenance and repair workers, general
  28. Network systems and data communications analysts
  29. Food preparation workers
  30. Teacher assistants

There is also a list of "30 Fastest Growing Occupations"  for 2008-2009 in the OOH.  Network Systems and Data Communications jobs are expected to increase by 53.4 percent from 2008-2009 with 140,000 new hires.
