Job Application Tips: Completing Job Applications

  • Complete the entire application truthfully (call your former Human Resource Office and verify start dates, job titles, reason for leaving, etc.)
  • Follow instructions
  • Typed application is best or complete it on-line if instructed
  • If you can’t type, print neatly in black ink (or blue if that is what the instructions say)
  • Complete the job experience section and don’t put, “see resume” for job duties or other parts of your application.
  • Put N/A for questions that do not apply to you
  • Keep a copy of application for your records
  • Go back at least 10 years on your jobs unless otherwise instructed
  • Include references (Don’t’ forget to ask your references for permission to use their names)
  • Sign application
  • Use “negotiable” if Salary Desired question is asked or put in an acceptable range
  • Include employer’s address and phone number (if employer has moved, include current address and phone number).
  • If company has closed (indicate that on your application)
  • If it asks for your supervisor’s phone number and your supervisor no longer works there, include your past supervisor’s current phone number if you know it and have his/her permission to use it. Also, include the main phone number for human resources of your former employer.
  • Be honest and brief about why you left, including if you were terminated. If you were terminated, put "involuntary departure" or you can state "would like to discuss".
  • Proofread and have someone else proofread your application
